New NOAA APT Image Decoder - RTL-SD

The decoder is called noaa-apt and takes a .WAV file of a NOAA satellite pass, and turns it into an image file. The .WAV file can be recorded in any SDR program like SDR#, HDSDR, GQRX etc. The program is programmed in Rust, and has ready to run binaries available for both Linux and Windows available on it's GitHub Releases page. Compared to the features found in WXtoIMG the software is fairly basic, but as WXtoIMG has been abandone WXtoImg is a feature-laden program that decodes NOAA data in real-time, saving the raw data as WAV files. The program can be made to process these WAV files into images in a variety of projections, and can create colour composites of numerous types. This is the most complex of the programs listed. To release its full power, registration is required, although the freeware version has more than sufficient features for the beginner The latest version of the decoder can be downloaded and utilized free of charge, subject to the usual NWS disclaimer. You may click here to download a copy of the decoder software. If you wish to be included on our decoders-announce mailing list, please visit our Decoder Announcements mailing list site to subscribe yourself. This list is our way of informing our users whenever we make changes or updates to our software General Information. The NOAA meteorological satellites, we'll try to decode, belong to the TIROS (Television InfraRed Observation Satellite) series, the first of which was launched in 1960.

  1. WXtoImg is a free weather satellite decoding program which can decode the APT signal, and also tell you the times and frequencies of the NOAA satellites passing overhead. There is also a paid version of WXtoImg which can unlock more features, however it is not required for use with RTL-SDR
  2. Typically, each full-size Meteor or Resurs picture would decode to either 1 MB JPEG or 3 MB BMP files. The two pictures of Iceland are full scale, and were taken within an hour of each other on 1999 April 1. The NOAA image showing better contrast on the mountains, either because of the lower sun angle of the earlier picture or the stronger gamma correction of SatSignal, but with the higher resolution is achieved by Meteor with SatSignal, the higher elevation of Meteor also producing a lower.
  3. al and install it by running: sudo apt install ~/Downloads/noaa-apt_1.3.1-1_amd64.deb. Executable without GUI: GNU/Linux x86_64 (no-GUI) zip. To install, extract the zip file anywhere
  4. These software packages are used to decode data from the NOAA and GOES weather satellites and also MetOp-A/B, FengYun-3A/B/C and Meteor M2/M2-2. Here are some pictures, courtesy of RSP2user, to whet your appetite

Atpdec is a NOAA POES satellite APT image decoder. It's an open source program targeted for Unix platforms (in particular Linux). It lacks fancy graphical interface but focus more on image quality. (see http://atpdec.sourceforge.net/gallery.html for some examples. N0ONG WX Sat Kepler Editor is designed to work only with AMSAT (verbose) format elements. Import the kepler file from AMSAT using the Open button. Everything other than the weather satellite elemnts will be removed automatically. The software supports recording, decoding, editing, and viewing on most versions of Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. WXtoImg supports real-time decoding, map overlays, advanced colour enhancements, 3-D images, animations, multi-pass images, projection transformation (e.g. Mercator), text overlays, automated web page creation, temperature display, GPS. This tutorial describes how to receive automatic picture transmissions (APT) from NOAA weather satellites using Gqrx SDR, record them to a WAV file, and finally decode the images using the free and open source Atpdec decoder. If you follow this guide you can end up with very nice results such as the one shown at the end. I have used the Funcube Dongle with an Arrow antenna for this example but. NOAA APT Decoder. A Terminal Aerodrome Forecast (TAF) is a concise statement of the expected meteorological conditions at an airport during a specified period (usually 24 hours). Each ICAO state may modify the code as needed. The TAF code, as described here, is the one used in the United States. TAFs use the same weather code found in METAR weather. USA West Coast from NOAA data, click for full image: I have produced two easy-to-use programs that may be of interest to HRPT enthusiasts - one is a reader for HRPT files with the same colour mapping from temperature as SatSignal and GeoSatSignal, and the second carries out geometric correction from the scanner view to a photographically correct view (also built into the reader)
